Since the 10 July, holidaymakers returning to England from certain countries don’t have to self-isolate. On the 4 July the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) lifted its “all but essential travel” rule to some international countries.
These countries will form travel corridors and currently include: France, Italy, Spain, Australia, Barbados, Croatia, Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Turkey, Denmark and Norway. You can find a full list on the Government Website.
The isolation rules will differ between England, Scotland and Wales. If you’re travelling abroad, check your local authority’s advice on self-isolation. If you have travelled through a country with restrictions in place, you will have to self-isolate when you return.
What should I check before booking a holiday?
Although the above list of countries where the “all but essential travel” rule is lifted was accurate when this article was published, the situation is always changing. Even if you’re travelling to an approved country, check the FCO advice before booking. The country you’re travelling to may have introduced different measures to control the spread of coronavirus which you will have to comply with. You should also check your local public health measures, as local lockdowns are being introduced to control the virus. Subscribing to FCO updates will keep you informed.
How does this affect my travel insurance?
If you travel to a country that’s not on the government list, you won’t be covered by your insurance. If it is, and the country itself hasn’t enforced a lockdown, you could be covered. Even then many Insurers are only providing cover in respect of Covid-19 for medical expenses. Generally, cancellation cover as a result of Covid-19 is not available.
